Leah Lemelin, FYS/PPD

 Practicing in Chicago

Three years ago, Leah Lemelin (she/her/hers) made a leap of faith and left her recruiting position with a national company to follow the path of serving expectant and new families as a labor support and postpartum doula.

Leah trained with Birth Arts International in 2016 and has pursued training in mindfulness-based caregiving with WisdomWay since 2018, having attended workshops, a weekend mindfulness retreat, online offerings, and the 70-hour First Year Specialist/Postpartum Doula training. This summer, Leah earned her First Year Specialist/Postpartum Doula Certification.

Creativity, connection, and the art of staying present is something that Leah has cultivated since she was a young child. Raised by a mother who taught yoga and having completed some yoga teacher training herself, movement and contemplative practices have been an important part of her self-care, and a source of restoration as she cares for others. When reflecting on her own pregnancy, birth and parenting, Leah feels that her yoga and daily meditation practice significantly supported her confidence and trust in herself during birth and beyond.

More about Leah: In addition to her lifelong learning in health and wellbeing, Leah has pursued studies in the arts, languages (speaking Spanish and Italian), design and the art of craft, and cooking. Leah holds a BFA in Visual Art & Leadership Skills from the University of Denver and studied painting and sculpture at the Art Institute in Florence, Italy. Leah loves the exploration of the world around her, whether it be making discoveries in the city with her children, embarking on international travel, or simply, a nearby running trail.

Leah is not only grounded in a connection with her own mothering experiences and the personal growth that comes with it, but also brings deep compassion and curiosity about the needs and experiences of other parents. Leah describes why this work is so important to her: “I feel a calling to support women and families moving through the transformative prenatal, childbirth and postpartum journey. My wish is to be of service to another, honoring wherever they are on their journey and whatever choices they make as a parent.”

Leah works full-time serving families in the Chicago area as a labor support doula and First Year Specialist.

Her clients have this to say about her:

“Her biggest strength is her compassion. She is very able to be a witness if someone’s going through something, whether it’s joyful or difficult.”

“Leah has an extraordinary ability to connect with people!”

“Leah helped my husband care for me, gave me massages and walked through the experience so we were completely comfortable with the whole process…I’m so happy we decided to use a doula. I fully attribute her support to my VBAC success. She was like a therapist, birth coach, physical therapist, and yoga instructor in one! She provided and held space for me and my husband to move through the experience as we wanted to. She was amazing in helping me to relax from the moment we booked her through the birth of our daughter.”
