What are Case Reviews?

At WisdomWay Institute, we provide monthly reproductive health case reviews to bring together doulas, lactation professionals, and other home visitors. We understand that all professionals encounter challenges in our client care, and oftentimes these challenges can make us feel isolated in our home-based practices.

Whether you’re new to the field or an experienced practitioner, having a forum with a live discussion, skillful perspectives, and trusted knowledge can bring depth and wisdom to your practice.

How do WisdomWay Case Reviews Work?

Each conversation will provide insights into common care-related issues as seen through the Compass of Mindful Caregiving. Based on submissions from you and other attendees, we’ll dig deep and provide expert mentor insights and evidence-based feedback to support you in your practice. These are like ‘grand rounds’ for doulas and lactation consultants who often don’t get the opportunity to learn and gain expert and peer perspectives in a safe and supportive environment.

We currently offer two kinds of monthly Reproductive Health Case Reviews: General Postpartum & Lactation. You can join us in participating by doing the following:

  1. Register for monthly General Postpartum and/or Lactation Case Reviews in our online learning platform, Thinkific.
  2. Register for our monthly doula newsletters on our homepage if you haven't yet done so. This ensures that you receive the most up-to-date information regarding our Case Review schedule. You'll then be able to share your questions with our team of experts and each month we’ll select a specific case to discuss.
  3. After signing up for doula newsletters and registering for our Case Review(s), you'll receive a copy of our guidelines. We ask that all participants follow these guidelines to maintain privacy and confidentiality during Case Reviews.
  4. Invite friends and colleagues from your practice community!

There is a place to be supported.

Overwhelmed by situations.
Alone, isolated in the decision-making process.

General Postpartum & Lactation Case Reviews:

General Postpartum Case Reviews

General Postpartum Case Reviews address general family needs and support WisdomWay First Year Specialists, postpartum doulas, non-medical providers, and in-home caregivers.

Topics might include: Practice -related challenges or topics, COVID precautions for doula practices, perinatal/post-adoption mental health, postpartum complications, family adjustment, transitions back to work, client communication, setting boundaries, infant needs, such as sleep, development, special needs and more.

We’ll look at developing our practice in ways that are evidence-based, and through the Compass of Mindful Caregiving. How can we build and use our skills and knowledge, maintain compassion for all we care for, establish great communication with our clients and their chosen Circle of Support, and maintain a partnership with those we serve that is based on respect, compassion, and healing-informed care?

Dates & Times:
2nd Tuesday of the month from 4-5pm CST.

Lactation Case Reviews

Lactation Case Reviews are facilitated by Board Certified Lactation Consultants and WisdomWay mentors and address lactation complications, nutrition support, and associated psychosocial challenges and barriers.

Topics might include: any lactation complication or management challenge, an unusual presentation of feeding behaviors, balancing lactation goals with restorative sleep, lactation after previous insufficiency, engaging family support for breastfeeding, collaboration within healthcare teams, cultural competencies, lactation during health challenges, lactation in the presence of perinatal mood disorders.

We’ll explore our own experiences as lactation professionals or doulas, that might include responding to conflicted emotions, removing obstacles, supporting confidence, avoiding shame, blame or pressure, the art of collaboration. Lactation care is more than the dyad, but involves engagement of the Circle of Support, and attunement to the context of lactation within the intersectionality of race, class, family structures, gender identity, communities, and our cultural fabric. We’ll use the Compass of Mindful Caregiving to frame our discussions.

Dates and times:
4th Tuesday of the month from 4 -5pm CST.
